In a study of needling the trigger point in the trapezius muscle, it was shown that muscle twitching is also present in the contralateral trapezius muscle, as in the ipsilateral muscle. This event can be interpreted as strong sensory signals are carried to the spinal cord in the area at the tip of the dry needling, causing a reflex response in the opposite trapezius muscle. In other words, during dry needling treatment, the effect should not only be local, but also the spinal cord levels, perhaps a mechanism involving higher systems.
